What to consider when considering ERP

b2ap3_thumbnail_Fotolia_69799452_XS---erp400.jpgMany companies are struggling with outdated or unsupported ERP systems that don’t provide the functionality required of today’s customers. Staying with old ERP systems can be a competitive disadvantage and a morale drain on your organization. So how do you go about selecting a solution that meets your needs and your budget.

The key to selecting and implementing any ERP is to first now your own processes in depth. Everyone knows their process, but few have documented it and really mapped it out and reviewed it with all the stakeholders in their organization to make sure that every detail is covered and best practices have been implemented to ensure maximum productivity. If you are hiring a company to figure out your process as well as implement your ERP software based on anecdotal feedback from employees who don’t have a strict process to start with, it could spell disaster.

Here are some sample cases where things went wrong.

  • Hershey Foods—A 19 percent drop in earnings was caused by an incompetent ERP implementation that wreaked distribution havoc during one of its most profitable seasons in the US: Halloween.
  • FoxMeyer Drugs—This pharmaceutical distribution company was forced to declare bankruptcy after an unsuccessful ERP implementation.
  • Whirlpool—ERP implementation crippled its shipping system, leaving appliances stacked on loading docks and not delivered to paying customers for a full eight weeks.
  • Volkswagen—Significant delays in parts shipments caused product inventories to build up to costly levels.
